EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility

What is
EPR?

EPR, or Extended Producer Responsibility, is the idea that manufacturers should be responsible for the environmental impact of their products and packaging throughout their life cycle. Governments have implemented EPR for certain products such as batteries, electronics and packaging, meaning producers are financially or physically responsible for the collection, disposal and environmental impact of the waste created by their products.

EPR is often seen as a financial compensation, but a company can also offset their negative impact by creating its own voluntary schemes, such as:

  • Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)

  • Take Back programs

  • Introducing ReUse models

By engaging with legislation proactively, brands can avoid heavy taxes and get materials back for reuse in the cleanest streams possible. By controlling the collection and processing, you can extract the maximum value from your resources and reduce your dependence on external supply chains.
