Gispen

AWARD WINNING DESIGN SOFA FROM >95% RECYCLED PLASTICS

In 2016 & 2017, Searious Business helped Gispen to become a frontrunner in circular economy. In only four-month time, we developed a design sofa from >95% recycled plastics.
After getting it production-ready, we helped the company to build their marketing story. With it, Gispen won the biggest tender ever for office furniture: the company can now supply furniture for €10M per year, for the coming 10 years, AND our sofa even won the Dutch Design Award 2019! This truly is a success story, for all players involved.

Approach

Searious Business assembled several partners in this innovative project. Waste collectors, plastic recycling companies, machine builders, designers, engineers, and the (Dutch) Technical University of Delft collaborated with us to obtain, use, and assess the recycled plastics coming out of this exciting process.

Mid-December 2016, we finished the first prototype: a design sofa for Gispen made out of > 95 % recycled plastics.
We used 3D printing for the frame, making it easy for assembly and disassembly. Thus, we could also avoid glue for placing the foam (from reprocessed content), and the linen from recycled polyester fibers can now be tucked nicely underneath and even swapped easily.

“We experienced quality with Searious Business.”

Vitra

Searious Business supported Vitra to move towards a production without (plastic) waste. Starting with their operations and offices, we helped to define strategy and set out an implementation roadmap. Next is zero waste production and converting waste back into high-end furniture

De Bijenkorf

De Bijenkorf is on a mission to become the most creative, inspiring and sustainable department store where everyone can feel special. As a large player, De Bijenkorf can make a significant impact with the materials they use in their (online) stores and behind the scenes. Searious Business was asked to advise on the sustainability of plastics and other packaging materials, as part of the company’s sustainability strategy.

Searious Business provided De Bijenkorf with insight into trending materials such as bio-based and biodegradable materials, plastic certification, existing and upcoming plastic legislation, and materials comparison and Life Cycle Assessment.

“Due to the extensive background information and the specialised advice provided by Searious Business, our purchasing teams can easily determine sustainable materials for our packaging and know what we can reasonably ask from suppliers.”

Goossens

Searious Business supported Goossens to move towards a production without (plastic) waste. We helped to define strategy and set out an implementation roadmap, focusing on their operations and suppliers. Next is implementation of zero waste packaging and converting waste back into high-end furniture.
