It aims to reduce plastic waste leakage from small island developing states (SIDS) and promotes clean shores and thriving communities.

The 'Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap' initiative, led by IUCN ORMACC, aims to reduce plastic waste leakage in five Caribbean SIDS: Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. The project builds on previous work, such as Plastic Waste Free Islands, and focuses on implementing effective, socially inclusive solutions for a plastic circular economy.

Sustainable Small Grants Program

Searious Business is organising the Sustainable Small Grants Program under the Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap initiative to support local business development on each island. The program provides funding for women- and youth-led initiatives that turn recyclable plastics into sustainable livelihoods in tourism, fisheries, and waste management. By offering financial support and capacity building, the program empowers communities to develop circular, economically viable solutions that reduce plastic waste and create long-term social and environmental benefits across the Caribbean.

OUR APPROACH

  • Review existing value chains for recyclable plastics and identify the most promising opportunities for community-based business development.

  • Engage local stakeholders to map potential grantees and align efforts with ongoing national and regional initiatives.

  • Host two online information webinars to explain the program, eligibility criteria, and how to apply for funding.

  • Provide guidance and tools to help applicants prepare strong, competitive proposals.

  • Develop a practical grants framework and manual to ensure transparent, fair, and effective distribution of funds.
