It aims to reduce plastic waste leakage from small island developing states (SIDS) and promotes clean shores and thriving communities.

The 'Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap' initiative, implemented and managed by IUCN ORMACC, aims to reduce plastic waste leakage in five Caribbean SIDS: Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. The project builds on previous work, such as Plastic Waste Free Islands, and focuses on implementing effective, socially inclusive solutions for a plastic circular economy.

Sustainable Small Grants Program

The IUCN leads the implementation and management of the Sustainable Small Grants Program under the Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap initiative, supporting local business development on each island. The program provides funding and capacity building for women- and youth-led initiatives that turn recyclable plastics into sustainable livelihoods across tourism, fisheries, and waste management sectors.

Searious Business supported the program’s initial design phase, including drafting the terms of reference for the call for proposals to help ensure the selection of high-impact projects.

WHAT WE DID

  • Reviewed value chains for recyclable plastics and identified high-potential opportunities for community-based business development.

  • Engaged local stakeholders to map potential grantees and ensure alignment with national and regional initiatives.

  • Delivered two webinars outlining the programme, eligibility criteria, and application process.

  • Equipped applicants with guidance and tools to strengthen proposal quality and competitiveness.

  • Developed a practical grants framework and manual to support transparent, fair, and effective fund distribution.
